EXISTENCE OF UNREGISTERED HUMAN MEDICINAL PRODUCT WITH BRAND NAME VEGA – 100 TABLETS

1. The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) is the Regulatory Authority under the Ministry of Health (MoH) responsible for protecting and promoting public health by regulating the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines, medical devices and diagnostics.
2. Through its routine regulatory operations, TMDA has noted with concern the existence of a product with brand name Vega – 100 Tablets which is circulating in covert supply channels.
3. The purported product whose labels indicate that it contains an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) namely Sildenafil Citrate and manufactured by Signature Pharmaceuticals Ltd, India appears as it is shown in the pictorial presentation below.

   

4. Products containing the claimed API are used for erectile dysfunction or impotence which is a condition affecting men who are not able to get and keep an erection firm enough for sexual activity.
5. Irrational use of such products is risky and can cause serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs) which can also turn out to be fatal to users. Amongst the known serious reactions include low blood pressure, priapism, Non-Arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) of sudden onset, and hearing loss accompanied by tinnitus. Other side effects are headache, facial flushing, nasal congestion, heartburn, indigestion, blurred vision and muscle or back pain.
6. TMDA would like to alert the public on the existence of this product and that it is not safe for human consumption. The product has not been registered by TMDA and therefore its quality, safety and efficacy are not known.
7. The public is urged not to use this product and in case of knowing its whereabouts, please notify TMDA so that necessary regulatory measures can be taken to confiscate and dispose of the same.
8. A nationwide search of the product has been launched by TMDA and the public is further asked to identify and report any person, dealer or company engaged in clandestine importation, supply or sale of this product for legal actions to taken accordingly.
