The Laboratory Technical Committee (LTC) is an expert advisory body established under the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices (Laboratory Analysis of Medical and Non-Medical Products) Regulations, 2021 to support the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) in safeguarding public health through excellence in laboratory analysis.

Purpose and Mandate

The LTC provides specialist advice to the TMDA Director General on all matters related to the analysis of regulated and non-regulated products, helping to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with national and international standards.

Composition

The Committee is composed of members with extensive expertise in:

  1. Pharmaceutical analysis, quality control, and quality assurance
  2. Microbiology and chemistry
  3. Laboratory technology and biomedical engineering
  4. Biotechnology and radiology
  5. Statistics and related scientific fields

Experts are appointed for a three-year term, renewable for one further term. The Committee may also appoint specialists with unique skills when specific technical expertise is required.

Core Functions

The LTC advises on:

  1. Development and validation of analytical methods
  2. Laboratory analysis of medicines, medical devices, diagnostics, and other products
  3. Development of laboratory training programmes
  4. Management of laboratory accreditation schemes
  5. Review and improvement of analytical processes
  6. Identification of research priorities
  7. Recommendations on analysis costs, fees, and charges
  8. Waste management practices
  9. Laboratory quality management systems and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  10. Any other matters related to laboratory operations and performance
