PRESS RELEASE

20th May, 2026

BAN TO MANUFACTURE, IMPORT, SUPPLY OR SALE VETERINARY PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCT NAMELY - Hi-tet 120

  1. The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) is the Regulatory Authority under the Ministry of Health (MoH) responsible for protecting and promoting public health by regulating the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines, medical devices and diagnostics.
  2. TMDA has detected with concern, fraudulent malpractices involving unscrupulous dealers who are clandestinely engaged in repackaging and relabeling of a veterinary pharmaceutical product with brand name Hi-tet 120.
  3. This product which contains Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is packaged in amber colored glass bottles and wrapped in yellowish carton boxes as shown in pictorial presentation below.

  4. The product is inadvertently sold at a higher price as compared to other veterinary medicinal products containing the same API available on the market.
  5. On further scrutiny, it has come to TMDA attention that, it is easy to tamper-around, maneuver and repackage the product due to the design and weaknesses in the container-closure system.
  6. Considering that this covert operation has been ongoing for quite some time now and for the reasons highlighted above, the TMDA has decided to ban the manufacturing, importation, supply and sale of this product with effect from the date of this notice.
  7. Any farmer, person, wholesale or retail outlet with any stock of this product is directed to contact TMDA for guidance on recall and disposal of the same.
  8. Following this ban, no person, company or dealer is allowed to import, supply or sale this product in the country. Contrary to this directive, punitive legal actions will be taken against perpetrators.
  9. The public is further urged to notify TMDA in case of being aware of any person, dealer or company engaged in manufacturing, importation, supplying or selling of unfit products for human or animal consumption.
  10. Official notification should be channeled through any nearby Police station or to TMDA Offices located in Dodoma, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha, Mbeya, Ruvuma, Tabora, and Geita, or email address: info@tmda.go.tz, or Toll-Free No. 0800110084.
  11. Together let’s fight against falsified, substandard and unregistered medical products to protect and promote our health.
