PAYMENT OF ANNUAL RETENTION FEES FOR THE YEAR 2026

1. The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) wishes to remind its esteemed stakeholders that, pursuant to Section 55 (b) of the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Act, Cap 219, the retention of products in the Register of registered products is subject to the payment of a prescribed annual fee.
2. A proforma invoice of all registered medicinal products for the year 2026 was generated on 2nd October 2025 and communicated to all Marketing Authorization Holders (MAHs) via their trader portal account. MAHs were required to scrutinize the issued proforma invoices and submit a list of products they intend to continue marketing in Tanzania to the Authority by 1st November 2025. This allows the Authority to issue final invoices for retention payments based only on the selected products. MAHs are now required to collect these invoices from the TMDA accounts units for payment.
3. The Retention Fee must be paid without penalty by 31st January. Payments made from 1st February to 31st March of each calendar year will attract a penalty, as prescribed in the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices (Fees and Charges) Regulations, 2021.
4. The registration of all non-declared/listed medicinal products, as well as declared products with outstanding retention fees, shall be suspended by 1st April of each calendar year. Any medicinal product registration that remains suspended for more than 12 months from the date of suspension shall be automatically revoked or cancelled from the register.
5. Please note that importation permits for non-declared products, and for any declared products with pending retention fees, shall not be issued effective from 1st April of every year.
6. MAHs are therefore advised to adhere to the prescribed procedures and timelines to avoid the inconveniences resulting from failure to pay retention fees on time.
