- Following the amendment of the Tanzania Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act Cap 219 through the Finance Act of 2019 with effect from 1st July, 2019; the regulation of Food and Cosmetics has been shifted from the then Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) to Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).
- The changes have resulted into the change of name from the then TFDA to Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) which has remained with the functions of regulating Medicines, Medical Devices and Diagnostics.
- In this context therefore, TMDA would like to officially inform the public and dealers of food and cosmetics in the country that all functions related to regulation of the two categories of products have now been shifted to TBS.

TBS will henceforth undertake the following regulatory functions:
- Receiving and processing of applications for registration of food and cosmetics manufactured within and outside the country ;
- Inspection of all premises dealing with manufacturing, storage, distribution and selling of food and cosmetic products;
- Issuance of all import and export permits including inspection of respective products at all Ports of Entry;
- Registration of premises dealing with manufacturing, slaughtering, wholesaling and retailing of food and cosmetic products;
- Regulation of promotion and advertisement of food and cosmetic products in all media;
- Monitoring and control of food borne diseases and surveillance of prohibited cosmetics;
- Collection of samples of food and cosmetics from the market for post marketing surveillance to ascertain the quality and safety of these products;
- Testing and analysis of food and cosmetic products in laboratory; and
- Organizing public education programmes on the effects of using unfit food and harmful cosmetics.
- With this press, we request all food and cosmetic dealers to communicate with TBS for guidance on how to submit applications for registration and permits;
- TMDA has handed-over to TBS all functions of regulating food and cosmetics including all applications for registration and permits submitted before the amendment of the Act; TMDA assures all dealers that all scientific and confidential information submitted earlier is safe and measures have been taken to securely transfer the same to TBS.
