APPROVAL AND GAZETTING OF THE TANZANIA MEDICINES AND MEDICAL DEVICES (CONTROL OF BLOOD AND BLOOD PRODUCTS) REGULATIONS, 2026 (GN. NO. 149)

1. The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) wishes to inform the general public, healthcare professionals, blood transfusion centers, health facilities, manufacturers, importers, exporters, and all relevant stakeholders that the Minister for Health has approved and published The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices (Control of Blood and Blood Products) Regulations, 2026, officially published under Government Notice (GN.) No. 149 with effect from 19th June,2026.
2. Made under the provisions of the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Act, Cap. 219, these Regulations set forth a robust legal framework designed to ensure that all processes related to blood, blood components and blood products throughout Tanzania Mainland meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficacy.
3. Key provisions under the new Regulations mandate the licensing, safety compliance and regulatory inspection of all blood establishments, processing facilities, collection centers and storage units across Tanzania Mainland.
4. Furthermore, the regulations establish strict controls over the import and export of blood, biological materials, and plasma-derived medicinal products, while instituting a robust hemovigilance system for monitoring and reporting adverse events and reactions.
5. All existing blood collection centers, processing entities, hospitals, importers, and related establishments are required to familiarize and align their operational processes with these Regulations.
6. Stakeholders and the general public may access and obtain a copy of the Regulations by visiting the TMDA website www.tmda.go.tz.
7. All stakeholders are further required to notify the Authority on the existence of their blood establishments or premises dealing with blood products within 90 days from the date of this notice.
8. Upon receipt of official notifications, the authority will conduct mapping of the available establishments to ascertain their validity and issue more directives in the future.
